Throughout the year, we'll profiling members of the spirit squad and band. Here's our third installment with senior mellophone section leader Lisa Hedlund.

Q: Why did you choose to be in Sun Devil Marching Band?

A: The better question is “Why not marching band?” I’ve been in marching band since high school and so it seemed natural to come work with the program (at ASU). I worked with our director, James Hudson, in high school and he had a hand in our drill writing and our music and so it kind of seemed natural to come up to ASU and do band and gain 350 friends before my first day of school. It was really a no-brainer!

Q: Why play mellophone?

A: The mellophone is the marching band version of the French horn (Hedlund played the French horn since she was in the fifth grade and won First Chair honors at All State four years in a row in high school).  I know some other instruments but mellophone is definitely the best thing, I think. We get a lot of melodies and counter-melodies in pieces and it’s a lot of fun! The camaraderie of the mellophone section at ASU has always been a big draw for me as well.

Q: Who is your favorite football player?

A: Oh, definitely Will Sutton. He’s such a character and it’s been really fun watching him lead the defense. Last season when we were at the Bowl game in San Francisco, my friend and I were debating whether we’d come back to marching band the following year because we weren’t sure if we’d have time for it. When we got to the game, we decided that if Will Sutton decided to stay for another year, we would stay too. And here we all are!

Q: What’s your top hit on your iPod right now?

A: “Demons” by Imagine Dragons.

Q: What’s the weirdest thing on your iPod?

A: Oh, probably all my band music. Some of the orchestral music I have is a little out there…to me they’re normal.

Q: What’s your favorite food?

A: Steak…and a burger. Oh man. Anytime.

Q: Who is your celebrity crush?

A: Oh, my. Ryan Gosling. No question. He is just so good-looking. I mean, have you seen the Notebook? Every girl wants a guy like that.

Q:  As a Speech/Hearing Sciences major, what do you plan to do with your degree?

A: I actually plan on getting my Master’s in Recreation Management so I can work in recreation on a college campus site.
