ATLANTA, Ga.--Just a year removed of missing out on postseason competition, second-year head coach Tim Mickelson not only brought the Arizona State men's golf program to NCAA Regional, then NCAA Championships, the team has now finished in the top-eight in the nation and has qualified for the match-play portion of the NCAA team championship. Arizona State will join California, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Texas, Illinois, New Mexico and UNLV in the two-day match-play competition to determine the overall team National Champion.

Freshman Jon Rahm, who opened the NCAA Championships with an unprecedented 61 and 10 birdies, finished the NCAA Championships in a tie for second place with a three-round total of 6-under 204. Rahm's second-place finish is the highest for any Arizona State golfer at Nationals since fellow Spaniard Alejandro Canizares took home the NCAA Title in 2003. California's Max Homa took home the NCAA Individual title at 9-under through 54 holes.

At the end of the third round, Arizona State found itself in a four-way tie for sixth place with New Mexico, UNLV and Texas A&M and entering a tiebreaker scenario for the final three spots. With the team's five golfers positioned on holes 11, 15, 16, 17, and 18, the Sun Devils' recorded the third-best cummulative score after each golfer finished their hole to earn the No. 8 seed.

Match play, rather than stroke play which takes the total shots a golfer makes on the course, is a scoring system where golfers go head-to-head to earn a point for the low score on each hole. Players can either win, half (tie) or lose the hole. The best out of 18 holes wins the match and a point for the team. With a team consisting of five players, the best of five matches wins the round. Arizona State is matched-up with Pac-12 opponent California in the first round of match-play competition tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT. Arizona State last qualified for match-play in 2009.
