FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The Arizona State men’s swimming team capped day two of the Pac-12 Championships with historical performances that etched new names into the Sun Devil record books. Arizona State currently sits sixth overall in the standings as the men head into the final day of competition on Wednesday.
Junior Alex Coci had the first record-breaking performance on Tuesday in the 100-yard butterfly. Coci swam a 46.82, placing eighth overall and earning an NCAA B-cut consideration. The time bested Francisco Sanchez’s 46.96, set in 1999, and the most recent Sun Devils to earn a top-10 record time in that race were Sean Boyle in 2008.
Freshman Thibaut Capitaine followed later in the afternoon with a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. His final time of 53.59 beat the previous ASU record by nearly a minute (54.28, set by Marcus Titus in 2006). It was also Capitaine’s best time of the season by almost three whole seconds. Capitaine earned an NCAA consideration time along with teammate Deniz Hekmati, who swam a 55.25 and also his season-best.
Arizona State rounded out the day with the 400-yard medley relay, which saw the Devils finish fifth overall. The team of David Adalsteinsson, Capitaine, Coci and Herbie Behm combined for an NCAA B-cut of 3:12.56, placing first in Sun Devil history by 1.22 seconds above 2002’s team.
The Devils also saw top-25 finishes in two other races, with David Adalsteinsson finishing 14th in the 100-yard backstroke and Derek Knittle finishing 21st in the 400 IM.
Arizona State wraps up their competition in the Pac-12 Championships on Wednesday, March 6 in Federal Way, Wash. The Devils will compete in the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 400 medley relay on their final day of the event.
