STANFORD, Calif. - Chiney Ogwumike (26 points, 14 rebounds) and Joslyn Tinkle (13 points, 11 rebounds) both posted double-doubles to lead No. 4 Stanford over Arizona State, 69-45 on Sunday.Freshman forward Promise Amukamara, who scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds. Amukamara led the team in offensive rebounds (3) and also tied junior guard Adrianne Thomas for the team lead in assists (3).
Although the Sun Devils never led, they were within striking distance of the Cardinal for much of the first half. After more than seven minutes of play, Stanford had scored eight points and led my only two.
Bonnie Samuelson, who would prove to be a difference maker in the game, hit the first of her five 3-pointers to put Stanford up 11-6. Tinkle then followed with a jumper to increase Stanford's advantage to 13-6.
Redshirt freshman guard Eliza Normen and freshman guard Arnecia Hawkins would respond with consecutive field goals to get ASU back within three, 13-10.
Stanford would build its lead to eight, but once again was not able to run away as 3-pointers by senior guard Micaela Pickens and Videckis cut Stanford's lead in half, 20-16.
ASU's offense would start to stall at that point and the Cardinal would take advantage. Samuelson, who scored 19 points and was the only Stanford player to connect from long distance on Sunday (rest of the team was 0-9), hit a 3-pointer to cap a 13-2 Stanford run, which put the Cardinal up 33-18 with 1:39 left in the first half.
Redshirt senior forward Janae Fulcher, who missed most of the week of practice and did not play in Friday night's loss at No. 6 Cal due to illness, scored the first basket of the second half to cut Stanford's 17-point halftime lead to 37-22.
The Sun Devils were unable to slice anymore off the deficit despite its defense limiting Stanford to only two field goals during the first eight-plus minutes of the second half.
An 8-2 run (five points of which came from the foul line) put the Cardinal up 53-28 with 11:30 left in the game.
Stanford shot only 36 percent in the second half, however it made up for that by hitting 12-of-14 free throws in the final 20 minutes (14-16 for the game).
The Sun Devils return to action on Friday (7 p.m.) when they host Utah.
