Women's Divers Post School Record Performances, Stanford Sweeps Swimming

The Arizona State swimming and diving meet against Stanford began with a showdown between the men's teams, as the Cardinal came out the victor, 171.5-113.5. The women were highlighted by record-setting performance is the 3-meter dive but fell overall 125-110.

The women's team started hot with the divers breaking a couple of Arizona State program records. Hailey Casper took second in the 3-meter dual on a score of 345.15, which rang in as a new ASU record previously held by Natalie Burgess (341.40) set in 2001. Morgan Weller responded to best the school record to a score of 350.25 and earn ASU the first and second spots in the event. Casper went on to finish first in the 1-meter with a tally of 309.53.

The 400 Medley Relay team of Taylor Wohrley, Alex Popa, Caroline Kuczynski and Shannon Landgrebe took second, clocking in at 3:43.03. Tristin Baxter, the school record holder in the 1000 Freestyle, paced the field to finish tops at 9:46.59, just three seconds off her personal best.

Through the ninth event, the Sun Devils tallied three wins with the second being Landgrebe's 50.32 performance in the 100 Free. Baxter took her second victory of the day, putting up a 4:49.27 showing in the 500 Free. The 400 Freestyle Relay team capped the meet with a second-place finish in 3:25.76 (Cassie Morrice, Baxter, Melanie Busch, Lizzy Luttrell). ASU fell in a final score of 125-110.

Senior Harrison Jones faced Stanford's Kristian Ipsen on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard in a rematch of the Wildcat Invitational event finals from last November. In a battle of two of the nation's best divers, Jones swept both events scoring 413.78 on the 1-meter and narrowly defeating Ipsen in the 3-meter by a little over a tenth of a point with a score of 397.58.

Hayden Thomas recorded a win in the 1000 Free in a time of 9:27.38 to put pressure back on Stanford after the Cardinal took the top two spots in the 400 Medley Relay to begin the meet. Ryan Glander followed with a second-place finish in the 200 Free, tying a Cardinal with a time of 1:42.07.

Thibaut Capitaine came from behind in the 100 Breaststroke to beat out Andrew Saeta of Stanford who led until the final stretch, coming in just behind Capitaine's 56.31 time. The Cardinal returned the favor to give fans its third close finish of the day when Herbie Behm finished second in the 50 Free (20.70) just behind SU's Aaron Wayne (20.40) to put the score in favor of Stanford, 86-43, at the break.

Behm had back-to-back close finishes with yet another second place finish, this time in the 100 Free, clocked at 45.96, just .04 of a second off the leader. The second half of the men's meet was sprinkled with close finishes that chipped away at Stanford's lead. Alix Coci took it home with a finish of 49.60 in the 100 Butterfly to give ASU some air in the team scoring.

The Arizona State men closed the swimming events in the 200 Free Relay with a third-place finish in a time of 1:24.13. The men fell to Stanford with a final score of 171.5-113.5.

Up Next:
Senior Day is Saturday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. against California. The final home meet for the women is Feb. 2 against Northern Arizona, with the time still to be determined.
