OREM, Utah – The Arizona State University wrestling team dropped to .500 on the season following a 26-15 loss the Utah Valley University on Friday night in Orem, Utah.
The Sun Devils and Wolverine Green split the matches down the middle as each won five bouts, but ASU managed no bonus point victories while UVU scored four – including three pins and a tech fall.
Codey Combs got things off on the right foot for ASU, notching his ninth straight dual victory at 157 pounds with a 5-2 decision over Ethan Smith that set up a 4-3 victory for Joel Smith at 165 pounds over Curtis Cook to put ASU up 6-0.
Monte Schmalhaus answered for UVU as he pinned Ray Water – who was filling in for Blake Stauffer – in 4:46 to knot things back up at six.
ASU ripped off the next three points with decision victories by Jake Meredith and Levi Cooper at 184, 197 and HWT and the Sun Devils were up 15-6 just past the midway point.
The wheels came off there, however, as Dalton Miller and Ares Carpio were both pinned in the first round and UVU was suddenly up 18-15.
Matt Kraus dropped a 10-3 decision at 141 pounds to Avery Garner before Josh Wilson logged a tech fall over Preston McCalmon to seal the deal.
ASU is now 7-7 on the season as the head to Idaho to take on Boise State on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT. ASU will be looking to remain undefeated in that matchup, taking a 2-0 record in Pac-12 play to the competition.
