LINCOLN, Neb. - The Arizona State University wrestling team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 9 Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., at the NU Coliseum on Saturday evening, falling by a score of 18-12.
A year removed from being handed the worst loss in school history at the hands of the Cornhuskers, the Sun Devils gave Nebraska all they could handle in a dual that wasn't decided until the very last match.
Nebraska's No. 6-ranked John Ihnen knocked off Kevin Radford in the evening opener in a 6-2 decision to put NU up 3-0 early on.
ASU ripped off three straight victories at 197, HWT and 125 pounds though as Jake Meredith, Levi Cooper and Dalton Miller each posted decision victories to put ASU up 9-3 through the first four matches.
Shawn Nagel got NU back on the board with a 4-0 decision over Trevor Wilson in Wilson's first event match as a Sun Devil to bring the Cornhuskers back within three.
Ridge Kiley evening things up with a 9-3 decision over Matt Kraus at 141 pounds to set up No. 10 Jake Sueflohn's 7-1 decision that put NU back up 12-9 with three matches left.
Codey Combs would knock off Ross Grande in a tight 1-0 contest to even things back at 12 heading into the final two matchups.
At 165 pounds, ASU's Parker Madl looked to earn near-fall points - if not a pin -against Austin Wilson with less than a minute left in the contest but the referee didn't see it the same and Madl dropped a 2-0 decision heading into the final match of the day that pitted No. 8 Robert Kokesh against No. 11 Blake Stauffer of ASU
Kokesh would knock off Stauffer by a score of 8-3 to seal the contest for the Cornhuskers and earn the victory.
ASU dropped to 5-2 on the season, but remains as the leader in the Pac-12 with a 1-0 record. The Sun Devils are done with competition for the calendar year and won't be back in action until the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Jan. 1.
