PALO ALTO, Calif.—The third-ranked Arizona State women’s golf team finished the first round of competition at the 2012 Stanford Intercollegiate in a tie sixth place, Friday, in Palo Alto, Calif. The Sun Devils shot a first-round total of 6-over 290, four shots back of round one leader USC.
Sophomore Noemi Jimenez leads the Sun Devils individually, shooting a 1-under 70 on the par-71, 6,130-yard Stanford Golf Course. Jimenez carded two birdies on the day to finish the round tied for fourth place and one shot out of the lead. Junior Daniela Ordonez carded a 1-over 72 on the first day of competition. Ordonez, who finished second at the Dale McNamara Invitational in September, holds the top scoring average for the Sun Devils.
The Sun Devils have won the Stanford Intercollegiate twice in the 16-year history of the event. ASU's most recent victory in Palo Alto came in 2009 with a team scoring a total of 840 (273-282-285), the second-lowest total recorded in the tournament's history. While the tournament has been held since 1995, the Sun Devils will look to also claim its first individual title at the event.
The second round of the 2012 Stanford Intercollegiate, hosted by Dr. Condeleeza Rice, continues tomorrow from the Stanford Golf Course. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
