BERKELEY, Calif. -
The No. 27 Arizona State Sun Devils fell 7-0 to the No. 9 California Golden Bears on Sunday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, California. 14th-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi handed ninth-ranked Jacqueline Cako just her second individual match loss of the 2012 season.
"I think we're all disappointed with today's result," Arizona State head coach Sheila McInerney said. "You have to give credit to Cal as they played well and were super tough."
The Golden Bears were assisted by an ASU forfeit on the number six singles court, and a forfeit on the number three doubles court which put the Sun Devils down to an early 2-0 deficit.
In an upset victory, No. 9 ranked Jacqueline Cako was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by a very strong Zsofi Susanyi -- the second loss for Cako on the weekend and just the second loss on the season. The freshman for Cal is ranked 14th nationally and has been the anchor playing at number one singles all season.
"It's never easy to play good teams on the road, but I expected us to be a lot tougher then we were so that is dissapointing. But Cal did not give us even an inch of room for error, and that made it very difficult." McInerney said.
Freshman Joanna Smith was the only Sun Devil to go to three sets on the day, ultimately falling to Alice Duranteau 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (9). J. Smith held the same title in last Fridays shutout match against Stanford, where the Sun Devils fell 7-0 as well.
"It's not going to be easier competition next weekend either. We're facing UCLA and USC on the road so we need to use this weekend as motivation to play better," McInerney said.
Arizona State drops to 10-5 on the 2012 duals season, standing currently at 2-3 in Pac-12 play garnishing wins from both Oregon and Washington last weekend.
