TEMPE – The Arizona State University track and field opened up the first day of competition at the Jim Click Combined Events on Thursday, March 29 in Tucson, Ariz., at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.

Junior Keia Pinnick got things for the #17 women’s team with 3,278 points to open up the heptathlon competition.   It was a new career-best first day score for Pinnick with arguably her two strongest events still coming tomorrow in the long jump and 800-meter run.

Pinnick opened the day with a time of 13.87 in the 100-meter hurdles, matching her career heptathlon best.   Pinnick then cleared 1.60m (5-03.00) in the high jump before posting a throw of 10.57m (34-08.25) in the shot put.  Pinnick closed the day with a 24.03 in the 200-meter dash – the second-fastest time of the day and a new career-best as well.

Pinnick will enter the second and final day of competition ranked fourth among the collegiate competitors and less than 150 points behind third-place Ryan Krais of Kansas State – the current collegiate leader.

On the men’s side, the Sun Devils had three student-athletes in action, led by junior Jamie Sandys.  Sandys currently sits eighth after five events with 3,536 points.

Sandys opened the day with a time of 11.45 in the 110-meter hurdles before a leap of 6.42m in the long jump.  Sandys had a throw of 12.30m (40-04.25) in the shot put and a clearance of 1.90m (6-02.75).  Sandys closed out the day with a 51.31 in the 400-meter dash.
