NORFOLK, Va. - The Arizona State women's soccer team dropped its second consecutive contest, falling to Old Dominion 3-1 on Sunday.
For the second time in as many games the Sun Devils (2-2-0) found themselves playing from behind early. The Lady Monarchs (1-3-1) took the lead in the ninth minute when sophomore defender Amber Cook headed in a corner kick by teammate Rachel Carroll to put ODU up 1-0.
The Sun Devils would even the contest at 1-1 in the 32nd minute when freshman forward Alexandra Doller scored her third goal of the season. Doller's goal was set up by sophomore forward Devin Marshall, who got free behind the defense but had her shot knocked away in a collision with Old Dominion's goalkeeper Brianna Alvarado. The ball was deflected out to Doller who put away the rebound to tie the game.
The Lady Monarchs would break the tie a little more than five minutes later when senior defender Lisa Bernardini took a pass from junior forward Kelly Evans along the left side and fired a shot that made it just inside the right post for the goal.
Freshman midfielder Taylor Smith would score Old Dominion's final goal of the half in the 43rd minute to extend the Lady Monarchs' lead to 3-1.
The Sun Devils outshot Old Dominion 12-10 for the match, including a 6-1 advantage in the second half, however they were not able to convert any of their other scoring opportunities after Doller's first half goal.
Doller led the Sun Devils for the second consecutive game with six shots (four shots on goal).
The Sun Devils return to action on Friday (4:30 p.m. PT) when they host Oklahoma in the Sun Devil Desert Classic. Prior to the ASU-Oklahoma game will be a contest between Arizona and Missouri at 2 p.m. PT.
