With all 18 teams in the field ranked in the top-25 in the nation, No. 8 Arizona State opened up the first round of the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview in championship form. The Sun Devils shot an opening round total of 5-over 293, one stroke off tournament leader USC. UCLA, Alabama and Vanderbilt are all tied for third at 8-over.
Sophomore Justine Lee leads the field of 93, shooting 1-under on the day. Lee, who is one stroke off her career low of 70, carded three birdies on the day. Neck-in-neck with Lee is Senior Giulia Molinaro, who won her second-career tournament last week at the Dale McNamara Invitational. Molinaro is tied for second place at even par after the first round.
Sophomore Laura Blanco is tied for 17th after the first round of competition, shooting 2-over 74. Sophomore Daniela Ordonez carded a 4-over 76 to tie for 42nd on day one, while freshman Noemi Jimenez is 7 over following the first round.
The field for the tournament includes 18 teams ranked in the top-25 in the preseason NGCA Golfworld Coaches' Poll: No. 3 Alabama, No. 12 Arizona, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 10 Arkansas, No. 13 California, No. 7 Duke, No. 16 Florida, No. 17 Georgia, No. 4 LSU, No. 9 North Carolina, No. 6 Purdue, No. 2 USC, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 20 Texas A&M, No. 24 Tulane, No. 1 UCLA, No. 15 Vanderbilt, and No. 5 Virginia.
The second round of the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview continues tomorrow at the par-72, 6,451-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club, which also plays host the 2012 NCAA Women's Golf Championship in May.
