The Arizona State men's golf team wrapped up the final round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini tournament in Olympia Fields, Ill. with senior Spencer Fletcher earning his first top-10 finish of his college career.
Fletcher tied for 7th with a 5-over par 215 (69, 74, 72). He opened the tournament strong on Friday with a 1-under par, and carried his momentum through the final two rounds. It was his 14th career collegiate tournament.
Freshman Mathias Schjoelberg had a strong final round in his first-ever college tournament. He finished tied for 33rd with a 12-over par 222 (73, 79, 70). He shot an even par on the day. Schjoelberg was tied for 56th at the start of the round.
Junior Jin Song finished tied for 46th at 15-over par. He was consistent in all three rounds, posting a 225 (76, 73, 76). Freshman Austin Quick improved from a tough second round, but still finished 73rd at 25-over par 235 (72, 84, 79). Freshman Cameron Palmer finished 75th at 42-over par 252 (81, 86, 85).
Stanford University took home the championship with a 9-over par 849 (277, 282, 290). Auburn and Oklahoma State tied for second place. Auburn posted a 25-over par 865 (285, 293, 287), while Oklahoma State was also at 25-over par 865 (282, 288, 295). Alabama finished 4th with a 27-over par 867 (285, 298, 284).
The Sun Devils finished 14th. They shot a combined 57-over par 897 (290, 310, 297). They finished 15th in this tournament last year.
The Sun Devils will next compete in the Tucker Invitational held in Albuquerque, N.M., on Sept. 30-Oct. 1. The Sun Devils won the event on Sept. 12-13, 2003. They won honors at the 1995 NCAA West Regional in Albuquerque and the NCAA Preview in the fall of 1991.
