TEMPE – The second day of action overall and the first for the collegiate and professional athletes came to a close on Friday night at the 32nd Sun Angel Track Classic with three members of the Arizona State University track and field team earning Top 5 finishes at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe. The day’s events included the hammer and pole vault with premier sections of each event also held.

In the first event of the day, the hammer throw, Sun Devil Ashley Lampley finished third in the open division and did so with a personal-best toss of 56.24m (184-06). That mark, which ranks her seventh all-time in Sun Devil history, was an improvement over the her previous best mark by over seven feet. The women’s pole vault brought about the only other mark to make ASU’s all-time Top 10 list as Linda Kuenzi, who finished seventh in the unseeded pole vault, cleared 3.51m (11-06.25) to tie for 10th on the list.

Also in the pole vault, this time the seeded section, Shaylah Simpson cleared 3.91m (12-10.00) to finish second while Cara Carpenter was fourth at 3.81m (12-06.00) to round out ASU’s Top 5 finishers. Corey Phallen was the top Sun Devil in the men’s seeded pole vault with his clearance of 4.93m (16-02.00) that placed him sixth while both Dylan Austin and Corey Kraft took top honors for ASU in the unseeded section as both cleared 4.63m (15-02.25) to place seventh and ninth, respectively.

Around the other events, former Sun Devil All-American and Olympic Gold Medalist Nick Hysong was back on the runway and captured the seeded portion of the pole vault with a clearance of 5.23m (17-01.75). In the women’s premier hammer throw competition, Jessica Crosby (Chula Vista Elite) won the event with a toss of 72.22m (236-11) to break the meet and venue record of Erin Gilreath (NYAC), who set the mark at 72.12m in 2004, which was then the American record.

The Classic concludes on Saturday with the discus starting at 9 a.m. and running events at noon. The premier running events will open at 5 p.m.
