TEMPE, Ariz.—With scores creeping up on the third day of play due to wind, the 11th-ranked Arizona State women’s golf team finished in seventh place at the 2011 PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
The windier and more mild conditions temperature-wise were in stark contrast to the previous two days, which hovered near the hundreds. With winds closing in on 25 mph, the Sun Devils shot 304 in the final round for a three-day total of 26-over 890.
In a close shot for shot battle, rivals UCLA and USC had the tournament title resting on the scores down to the very last stroke. However, No. 3 UCLA was able to pull out the victory over the top-ranked Trojans with a 1-under 863 for the tournament.
Individually, freshman Sophia Popov, of USC, took home medalist honors shooting consistent scores and working the greens, as she noted in her acceptance speech. Popov shot a 5-under 211 (69-71-71) to take home ASU’s unique Kachina Doll trophy.
For ASU, junior Carlota Ciganda, battling back into the lineup for the Sun Devils after an illness kept her from competing in San Diego, finished in a tie for sixth place overall. The junior shot a 1-over 217 (71-69-77) on the ASU Karsten golf course, the same course where Ciganda will look to defend her two-consecutive Pac-10 titles.
Arizona State will host the 2011 Pac-10 Women’s Golf Championships, April 17-19. Ciganda had previously won the Pac-10 individual title in 2009 and 2010, becoming the first golfer to win consecutive championships and the second ever to accomplish the feat twice. The other golfer? Arizona State’s very own Wendy Ward.
