TEMPE – The Arizona State University track and field team opened competition at the 53rd Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on Friday with members of the team winning four events, including two on the track and two in the field. On the track, Jasmine Chaney led a 1-2-3 sweep of the women’s 400m hurdles and Ryan Milus captured the open 100m dash for men while Alycia Herring won the women’s open long jump and Bryan McBride cleared 7-feet for the second week in a row to capture the men’s open high jump.
Chaney led a sweep of the Top 3 places in the women’s 400m hurdles, finishing first in 57.71 while Kayla Sanchez and Keia Pinnick followed behind her in 57.76 and 57.97, respectively. The time turned in by Sanchez ranks sixth all-time in ASU history while Pinnick’s time stands as the seventh-best all-time. Chaney also took third in the 100m hurdles (13.51) while teammate Christabel Nettey was fourth (13.71).
With those three times under 58-seconds in the intermediate hurdles, Chaney, Sanchez and Pinnick became the first teammates in ASU history to run under that time barrier in the same season and only the second trio of teammates to run under 60-seconds in a career at ASU. In the early to mid-90s, Omolade Akinremi (55.44 in 1995), Omotayo Akinremi (56.86 in 1993) and Christy Akinremi (59.37 in 1993) became the first trio of teammates to break the 60-second barrier for the Sun Devils. Currently, ASU has surpassed Texas as the school with the most women with times under 58-seconds as the Sun Devils now have three and the Longhorns two.
Herring captured the long jump with her leap of 6.07m (19-11.00) while Samantha Henderson was one centimeter behind her at 6.06m (19-10.75) to finish third. Henderson tied with another athlete for second place, but took third based upon the next best jumps turned in by both women. On the men’s side, McBride won the high jump for the second week in a row as he once again cleared 2.15m (7-00.50), keeping him just off the school’s all-time Top 10 list by one centimeter.
ASU’s final victory came in the 100m dash where Milus ran 10.46 to win the event .20 seconds. Staying on the track, two men in the 5,000m runs turned in solid times, including Nick Happe, who finished 12th in the Olympic Development race in 13:54.15, the sixth-best time in school history. In the men’s open ‘A’ race at the same distance, Darius Terry took fourth place overall and ran 13:57.27, putting him 11th on the school’s all-time list.
The Relays continue through Saturday night.
