TEMPE – The Arizona State University track and field team opened its second outdoor weekend with individuals competing in a pair of meets, many of which came on the first of two days of the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe on Friday night. The hammer and pole vault competitions were held at Sun Angel Stadium where freshman Shaylah Simpson won the women’s pole vault for the second week in a row to lead the way.

Simpson cleared 3.90m (12-09.50) on the cool evening in the Valley, giving her the second win of the outdoor season after taking the title at the Baldy Castillo Invitational. In the men’s competition, Corey Phallen was the top Sun Devil finisher as he cleared 5.10m (16-08.75) to take third place.

In the hammer throw, Ashley Lampley and Anna Jelmini each recorded personal-best marks for the Sun Devils and moved into ninth and 10th-place, respectively, on the ASU all-time Top 10 list. Lampley finished fourth with a toss of 53.09m (177-1) while Jelmini was sixth at 53.48m (175-5). At the Stanford Invitational, a trio of distance runners competed in the 10,000m run with both men placing their names on the ASU all-time Top 10. In that race, Ben Engelhardt ran 29:33.64 to finish 22nd in the race and record the fifth-best time in school history while Daniel Lovell etched his name at No. 7 after finishing 23rd with a time of 29:44.47. For the women, Lindsay Prescott was 32nd overall in 34:50.72, just five seconds off her personal best.
