COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The first day of action at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships came to a close on Friday night inside the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, Texas, with two Arizona State University athletes finishing ninth, just one spot away from scoring in the meet. Both Jasmine Chaney and Jordan Clarke were close to Top 8 finishes for the Sun Devils, who did not score on the first day of competition.
Chaney ran in the preliminary round of the 200m dash and won her heat in 23.20, but the meet called for the Top 8 times (not heat winners and then times) to advance to the final with Chaney just missing out. She was 0.03 behind eighth place, with the final qualifier running 23.17 in the preliminary rounds.
Clarke reached the finals of the men’s shot put, but could not improve upon his preliminary round mark and also took ninth in his event. Clarke, who entered the meet ranked 15th out of 16 competitors in the field, hit a season and personal-best (indoors) mark of 18.70m (61-04.25) in the second round of throws to earn a spot in the finals. While it did not earn him at Top 8 placement, Clarke’s mark improved upon the No. 6 mark in school history, the third time he has updated his name on the chart this season.
The final competitor on the day was Christabel Nettey in the women’s long jump, who finished 17th overall with a mark of 5.13m (16-10.00). Ranked No. 4 heading into the national meet, Nettey sustained an injury on her first attempt and was forced to withdraw from the competition with her mark placing her in the event and potentially garnering her All-America honors, which will be announced by the USTFCCCA following the conclusion of the Championships.
The Championships conclude on Saturday with the Sun Devils have two entries in the final day of action. At 3:45 p.m., Anna Jelmini will compete in the shot put while the women’s 4x400m relay of Chaney, Sarah Geren, Keia Pinnick and Kayla Sanchez are set to run in the final at 7:10 p.m.
