PALOS VERDES, Calif.--Led by a first-place finish by junior Carlota Ciganda, the 14th-ranked Arizona State women's golf team finished two strokes off first place at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, hosted by Ohio State. ASU shot three round total of 34-over 886 (298-294-294) to finish in second place behind second-ranked USC.
The Sun Devils, who began competing as a team in January, have two top-three finishes under their belt. ASU previously finished third at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. The line-up, composed of two juniors and three freshmen, finished in second place in a Northrop Grumman field which included eight teams ranked in the Golfweek top-30.
Junior Carlota Ciganda took individual medalist honors, winning the tournament two years after Sun Devil Juliana Murcia won the title in 2009. The All-American shot a 2-over 215 (73-70-72), two strokes ahead of second-place Natalie Sheary of Wake Forest. Ciganda’s victory at the Northrop Grumman Regional Championship is the fourth in her collegiate career and first regular-season victory. Previously, Ciganda has medaled at the 2009 and 2010 Pac-10 Championships and the 2009 NCAA West Regional.
Next up the Sun Devils travel to New Orleans, La. to compete in the All State Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, hosted by Tulane University.

What golf writers are saying about Arizona State women's golf on Twitter:
@GWInsider (Ryan Herrington): Runner-up finish feel like a win: Ariz St women fall 2 shots shy as USC defends Northrop Grumman title, but "new" Sun Devils make statement.
@GolfweekWildman (Asher Wildman): Is the Arizona State #SunDevils a team to be reckoned with? They've only played 2 events as a team, and still look like a top 10 team.
@GolfweekRingler (Lance Ringler): The Arizona State women may win the Northrop Grumman ... Interesting! Looks the under on ASU's ranking will be good this year.
