PALOS VERDES, Calif.--The Arizona State women’s golf team is in fourth place after the first round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, hosted by Ohio State. The Sun Devils shot a 14-over 298, eight strokes behind first-place No. 3 USC.
“I think the winner today was Palos Verdes Golf Club,” said head coach Melissa Luellen. “Always a challenging golf course with small greens. The weather is perfect but the golf course is tough as always.”
Juniors Carlota Ciganda and Giulia Molinaro led ASU after the first round, each carding a 2-over 73 after 18 holes to tie for fifth. Freshmen Daniela Ordonez and Justine Lee each shot a 5-over 76 in round one to finish the day in a tie for 20th. Freshman Laura Blanco rounds out the Sun Devils, shooting a 7-over 78 on the first day of competition, tying for 31st.
“Overall it was a pretty good start,” said Lullen. “Fortunately we have two more days to go. [The team] knows they can do better and they know they can compete.”
The second round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge continues tomorrow at the par-71, 5,912-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
