TEMPE, Ariz.--The Arizona State women's tennis team opened the first round of the 17th Annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational to conditions Arizona residents know all too well. With dust seemingly blowing from every direction, the Sun Devils notched three singles victories and a win on the doubles court, Friday.
Senior Michelle Brycki led the way for the Sun Devils, winning her first two singles matches to stay alive in the main draw bracket. The senior came back in the opening round of 32, after dropping her first set to Ohio State's Fidan Manashirova, to defeat the Buckeye 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
After the long, drawn-out match, Brycki quickly regained her composure and defeated Michigan's Sarah Lee, 6-2, 6-1, despite being inundated by a roving dust storm moving through the area. Brycki competes tomorrow in the tournament's quarterfinals against Cal's Anett Schuetting.
Junior Nicole Smith also notched a singles victory on the day. Smith defeated Anna Livadaru of Northwestern, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the round of 32. The victory would be Smith's only singles match of the day, as the junior opted out of her round of 16 match against Cal's Tayler Davis to help smoothly transition back from an injury she sustained last season.
The Sun Devils also notched a victory on the doubles court with the pair of Brycki and Joanna Smith getting the win over the mixed pair of Bonacic of Kansas State and Becker of Ohio State, 8-4.
The second round of the 17th Annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational continues tomorrow at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz.
