TEMPE – The Arizona State University volleyball game fell in three sets against the No. 2 UCLA Bruins on Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena, 15-25, 21-25, 17-25.
Erica Wilson and Malia Bachynski led the way for ASU (4-12, 0-7 Pac-12)) with eight kills a piece. As a whole, the Sun Devils hit just .153 from the field and committed 18 errors.
ASU was just unable to get things rolling against a dominant Bruins (14-2, 7-1 Pac-12) squad that was hitting on all cylinders on the night.
With the score tied 12-12 in the first set, UCLA used a 6-0 run to pull away from the Sun Devils en route to closing the set on a 13-3 run. The Sun Devils hit just .133 from the floor in the set as the Bruins jumped out to a quick lead and never really looked back. Wilson had three kills of her eight kills in the first to lead the team.
The second set started off more positively for the Sun Devils as the team jumped out to an early 12-8 lead on the heels of three straight kills by Bachynski, who set a season high for kills on the match. The Bruins fought back though, tying the game at 12 and continuing to an 18-12 lead with a run that reached 10 consecutive points. ASU improved their hitting percentage to .250 in the set behind Bachynski’s five kills but UCLA’s firepower proved to be too much as the cruised to a final set score of 25-21.
The third set was all UCLA as it went on an 8-0 run with the score at 10-8 and never looked back, closing out the Sun Devils 25-17.
Arizona State will be back in action tomorrow against Southern Cal with the game set to get underway at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
