LOS ANGELES, Calif.--Arizona State women's tennis player Jacqueline Cako defeated the reigning NCAA singles champion and top-ranked player in the nation Jana Juricova of California at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif., on Friday.
Cako, ranked 11th in the nation, defeated Juricova in an exhaustive 7-6, 7-6 battle on the Riviera Tennis Club courts in the tournament's semifinal round. Earlier in the day, Cako defeated 14th-ranked Texas' Aeriel Ellis, 6-3, 7-5 in the tournament's quarterfinal round to set up the match with Juricova.
With the wins, Cako automatically qualifies for a spot in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6 in Flushing, N.Y.
Tomorrow, Cako faces 35th-ranked Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State in the ITA/Riviera All-American Championship held at the Riviera Tennis Club.
