Sept. 12, 2011

TULSA, Okla. - In a dramatic opening statement for the newly minted women's golf season, the Arizona State Sun Devils began the first round of the Dale McNamara Invitational by setting themselves apart from the competition. In the first round the Sun Devils shot an 8-under 280, which ties for the program's fourth-lowest 18-hole team total. Arizona State currently has a 14-stroke lead over second place Oklahoma State.

Leading the way for Arizona State is senior Giulia Molinaro, who, through some inspired play, carded six birdies in the first round. Molinaro eclipsed her previous career low of 69 by shooting a round-one total of 5-under 67. Molinaro currently holds a three-stroke lead at the top of the individual leader board.

And by a margin of three strokes, close behind sit sophomores Justine Lee and Daniela Ordonez. The Sun Devil trio makes up the top-three individuals on the day, with Lee and Ordonez both shooting 2-under 70's to round out the top-three spots. With the 70, Lee sets a new career low, while Ordonez ties her previous career low set at the 2011 NCAA East Regional.

Freshman Noemi Jimenez is tied for eighth in her collegiate golf debut, shooting a 1-over 73 in the first round. Sophomore Brittany McKee is tied for 33rd after round one, shooting a 5-over 77.

The second round of the Dale McNamara Invitational, hosted by the University of Tulsa, continues tomorrow at the 6,626-yard, par-72 Patriot Golf Club.
