DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—The 10th-ranked Arizona State women’s golf team finished the first round of competition at the 2011 NCAA East Regional in a tie for fifth place with Purdue. ASU shot a 7-over 295 at the par-72, 6,271-yard LPGA International Legends Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. Coastal Carolina sits a top the leaderboard at 2-under on the day.
Junior Giulia Molinaro led the Sun Devils in the first round, firing a 1-under 71. Molinaro carded three birdies on the day to finish the first day in a tie for sixth place. Jessica Negron of Florida State and Jessica Alexander of Coastal Carolina are the current leaders, shooting a 3-under 69’s.
Junior All-American Carlota Ciganda shot a 1-over 73 on the first day to tie for 19th. Ciganda is known for her post-season success, taking medalist honors at the 2009 NCAA West Regional.
The top-eight teams in each regional, along with two individuals, will qualify for the NCAA women’s golf Championships, hosted by Texas A&M. The second round of the NCAA East Regional continues tomorrow from Daytona Beach, Fla.
