EUGENE, Ore. – The second day of competition at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds in Eugene, Ore., came to a close on Friday night with four more Arizona State University individuals punching their tickets to the NCAA Championship Finals in Des Moines, Iowa, in two weeks, including Cj Navarro, who used a personal-best throw to reach the next round, and a trio of sprinters on the track. The meet, being held at Oregon’s Hayward Field, is the first step to competing for national titles and All-American honors in two weeks at Drake.
In the hammer, Navarro did what she had to do and continued to improve to advance to the national finals as she was in 16th place after her first three throws before using a personal-best toss of 58.97m (193-05) to jump to eighth overall and earn a place in the Top 12, which is the cut-off to reach the Finals. Navarro was in 22nd through two rounds before posting a mark of 57.11m (187-04) to make the Top 16 and earn three more throws. There, she had two fair throws before hitting her big toss in the final round and move up to No. 4 all-time in ASU history.
Jasmine Chaney and Kayla Sanchez each did what they needed to in order to advance to the Finals in the 400m hurdles as Chaney was the third qualifier in 56.90 while Sanchez was the 12th and final qualifier at 58.57. With both advancing to the national meet in two weeks, ASU is the only school in the West to qualify more than one runner in the event and one of three schools overall as both Miami and Penn State qualified two each from the East.
The final Sun Devil to advance to the national finals came in the men’s 100m dash as Ryan Milus ran 10.45 to finish second in his heat and earn one of nine automatic berths in the event. The Top 3 finishers in each of the three heats, along with the next three fastest times overall, advanced to Drake with the rookie Sun Devil being one of those individuals. He will be one of only five freshmen to compete in the event in two weeks at the Finals.
With the additions of Chaney, Milus, Navarro and Sanchez, the Sun Devils now have seven total individuals that have qualified for the Finals. The others that qualified include Anna Jelmini (shot put) and Christabel Nettey (long jump) for the women and Jordan Clarke (shot put) for the men. Jelmini and Clarke will try to advance in a second event on Saturday as they compete in the discus.
Chaney also competed in the first round of the 100m hurdles and ran 13.60 to qualify 12th in the event. The quarterfinals for the event will be held on Saturday and, if she can maintain her placement, would move on to the Finals as one of the Top 12. Nettey competed in the same event, but did not make the Top 24, running 14.09 to place 35th.
Several Sun Devils fell just shy of advancement, including Williams Henry in the 400m dash, Mason McHenry in the 800m run and Bryan McBride in the high jump. Henry ran 46.53 in the 400m dash and finished 13th overall, just 0.05 off of the 12th position and missing a trip to the Finals by one place. McHenry ran 1:49.00 flat to finish 14th overall while McBride cleared 2.06m (6-09.00) to tie for 14th, meaning both men missed advancement by two places.
Other Sun Devils that competed on the day but did not advance included Kelsey Caesar in the 400m dash (16th at 47.00); Allante Battle in the 100m (18th at 10.68) and 200m (30th at 21.75); Daniel Auberry in the 200m (42nd at 22.10); and Clarke in the hammer (19th at 59.77m/196-01) for the men and women’s competitors Sanchez in the 100m (22nd in 12.04); Kauren Tarver in the 3,000m steeplechase (31st in 10:35.10); and Shaylah Simpson in the pole vault (22nd at 3.85m/12-07.50).
The final day of action will take place Saturday in Eugene.
