EUGENE, Ore. – Despite on and off rain showers and cool conditions, the Arizona State University track and field team found success inside Hayward Field on the Oregon campus in Eugene, Ore., on Thursday afternoon as nine of 12 runners advanced to the next round of competition at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds West, moving one step closer to reaching the NCAA Finals in Des Moines, Iowa, in two weeks. Along with those advancers, three individual Sun Devils punched their tickets to the Finals in the field events as all three placed in the Top 12, which is the cut-off this week for reaching the national event in two weeks.
Anna Jelmini (shot put) and Christabel Nettey (long jump) both advanced to the Finals as both finished 10th in their respective events while Jordan Clarke, an All-American one year ago, will return to the Finals in the shot put after taking fifth. Jelmini hit a mark of 15.86m (52-00.50) to advance while Nettey’s leap of 6.16m (20-02.50) was good enough to send her through. Clarke’s mark of 18.35m (60-02.50) punched his ticket to Des Moines.
On the rain-slicked track, Kayla Sanchez had a solid day as she finished in the Top 3 in each of her two races to assure her a spot in the quarterfinals on Friday. Sanchez was the ninth-overall qualifier in the 400m hurdles in 58.62 before posting the 17th qualifying position in the 100m dash in 11.63. She will join Jasmine Chaney in the 400m hurdles event on Friday after the senior ran 58.29 to qualify fifth. Both women will now have to finish in the Top 12 to move onto the Finals.
The men had six individuals advance from the first round action today to quarterfinal runs later this week. In the sprints, both Ryan Milus (10.40) and Allante Battle (10.58) advanced in the 100m dash with the 10th and 21st times, respectively, while both William Henry (46.81) and Kelsey Caesar (47.42) advanced in the 400m dash with the 13th and 25th-best times, respectively. In the 800m run, Mason McHenry qualified 10th overall in 1:49.18 to move on while Darius Terry was the sixth qualifier in the 1,500m run in 3:45.32. All but Terry will run for a spot in the Finals on Friday (Terry’s quarterfinal race is on Saturday).
A handful of other Sun Devils competed on the day as well, but fell short of the qualifying standard to move on. Those individuals included Alyssa Allison (4:45.27) in the 1,500m run; Lindsay Prescott (35:27.79) in the 10,000m run; and the trio of Keia Pinnick (5.82m/19-01.25), Samantha Henderson (5.79m/19-00.00) and Alycia Herring (foul) in the long jump for the women. On the men’s side, Nectaly Barbosa (3:54.87) competed in the 1,500m run; Daniel Auberry (10.67) ran in the 100m dash; Ben Engelhardt (30:07.38) ran in the 10,000m run; Chris Benard (7.04m/23-01.25) in the long jump; Marc Peck (61.89m/203-00) in the javelin; and Corey Phallen (5.05m/16-06.75) in the pole vault.
The West competition continues through Saturday in Eugene.
