TUCSON, Ariz. – The first of two days of competition at the 2011 Pac-10 Track & Field Championships came to a close on Friday night at Drachman Stadium in Tucson with the Arizona State University program capturing a pair of individual championships and qualifying a large group of individuals to the finals that will be held the next day. On the day, Christabel Nettey captured the long jump title for the women while Jordan Clarke won the men’s shot put title.

In the team standings, the women will head into the second day in second place with 53 points while Arizona holds a first-day lead with 70 points. The remaining women’s teams in the Top 5 include Oregon (49.5), Stanford (48) and USC (24). On the men’s side, the Sun Devils are in a tie for fifth place with UCLA as both squads have scored 26 points. Oregon leads the way with 53 points and is followed in the Top 3 by Arizona and Stanford, who are both tied with 45 points. Washington is just ahead of ASU in fourth place with 31 points.

Nettey hit a big personal-best mark of 6.54m (21-05.50) to capture her first title in the long jump and the first for a Sun Devil since Tiffany Greer won back-to-back titles in the event in 2003 and 2004. Her mark, which ranks her second all-time behind only Jacinta Bartholomew (6.62m/21-08.75) in 1989, led three Sun Devils that scored in the Top 8 as Samantha Henderson, the 2011 Pac-10 heptathlon champion, finished seventh at 6.12m (20-01.00) and Alycia Herring took eighth at 6.09m (19-11.75).

In the shot put, Clarke had five measured throws, all of which would have won the competition, as he took his first Pac-10 title with a season-best mark of 19.05m (62-06.00) after taking second one year ago as a freshman. This year, Clarke, who kept a streak alive of three-consecutive Pac-10 titles in the event for ASU (Ryan Whiting won in 2009 and 2010), scored 10 points in the event for the Sun Devils while senior Casey Fonnesbeck added one point by finishing eighth overall at 16.57m (54-04.50). For Fonnesbeck, his point earned gave him points scored in a pair of conferences in his career as he placed sixth (2009) and seventh (2008) for Illinois.

Staying in the field, rookie Bryan McBride recorded a personal-best clearance in the high jump and finished third in his first conference event -- and the first final of the Championships on the men’s side -- as he cleared 2.17m (7-01.50) to pick-up six points for the team. McBride now ranks 10th all-time in ASU history by himself after he bettered his previous best of 2.16m recorded earlier this season. The Sun Devils also picked up points in the field from Chris Benard and Marc Peck, who finished fourth in the long jump and sixth in the javelin, respectively. Benard scored five points by jumping to 7.43m (24-04.50) in his first Pac-10 meet while Peck threw 67.20m (220-05) to post the seventh-best mark in school history.

The women also scored in three more field event finals and two distance races as well. In the field, rookie Anna Jelmini finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 15.53m (50-11.50) while Cj Navarro finished seventh in the hammer with a mark of 55.36m (181-07). Shaylah Simpson, another talented freshman on the squad, cleared 3.98m (13-00.75) despite high winds in the pole vault to finish fifth overall. On the track, Kauren Tarver and Lindsay Prescott both charged late in their races to score. Tarver was in 10th place before surging to finish sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:40.83 while Prescott did the same thing in the 10,000m run to finish sixth at 36:27.39.

While several Sun Devils scored on the opening day of action, several others were on the track setting themselves up for the finals on Saturday by advancing through the preliminary round. For the women, Jasmine Chaney led a charge that saw four different sprinters advance to the finals of at least two different events, including the senior, who reached the finals of the 100m hurdles (4th), 400m dash (3rd) and 400m hurdles (8th). Dominique’ Maloy qualified for the finals of the 200m (8th) and 400m dashes (9th); Keia Pinnick made the finals in the 400m dash (8th) and 400m hurdles (6th); and Kayla Sanchez reached the finals of the 100m dash (6th) and 400m hurdles (6th).

In the 100m dash, Sanchez’s preliminary round time of 11.52 is the 10th-fastest in ASU history. But the women didn’t stop there as they are the only team to qualify three finalists in a pair of sprints as the Sun Devils will have one-third of the field in both the 400m dash and the 400m hurdles. The 100m hurdles will have two finalists as Nettey reached the Top 9 along with Chaney.

The men also had a pair of sprinters reach the final in multiple events, led by Daniel Auberry and Ryan Milus. The rookie Milus posted the top time in the 100m dash in 10.23 and was sixth in the 200m dash in 20.99. His 100m dash time ranks in a tie for the fourth-best ever at ASU, equalling the mark of Kenny Robinson in 1985. Auberry reached the final in both events as well, running eighth in the 100m and ninth in the 200m. Allante Battle (7th) also will run in the 100m final.

Getting into the longer races, both Kelsey Caesar (6th) and William Henry (7th) will be in the final of the 400m dash while senior Ian Caracciolo grabbed the ninth and final spot in the 400m hurdles. Mason McHenry will run in the final of the 800m event on Saturday as the sixth qualifier while Darius Terry qualified second in the 1,500m run.

The Championships conclude on Saturday and mark the final chance for athletes to post marks that could qualify to compete in the NCAA Preliminary First and Second Round in Eugene, Ore., in two weeks.
