TEMPE- The No. 23 Arizona State men's golf team took ninth place and senior Oscar Zetterwall finished in the top 20 at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships in Stanford, Calif. Registering their lowest round of the tournament, the Sun Devils moved out of the cellar with a fourth round 4-over par 354 to close at 56-over par 1456 (375-368-359-354).
Zetterwall, competing in his first Pac-10 Championship, birdied two out of the first three holes on the final day to finish in a tie for 20th. He shot a 2-over par 72 and finished at 6-over par 286 (73-71-70-72). Junior Philip Francis continued his climb up the leaderboard, recording a final round even par 70 to tie for 28th with a 9-over par 289 (76-74-69-70).
Seniors Thomas Buran and Scott Pinckney each shot their lowest rounds of the weekend to finish in a tie for 35th at 12-over par 292. Buran (74-74-73-71) closed with a 1-over par 71 on the final day and Pinckney (78-72-72-70) carded a final round even par 70 after tallying a trio of birdies, bringing his four-round total to 11.
Seniors James Byrne and Jesper Kennegard both closed out their final conference championship with their best rounds of the tournament. Byrne tied for 48th at 19-over par 299 (74-77-75-73) following a 3-over par 73 and Kennegard shot a 1-over par 71 to place 60th at 30-over par 310 (80-83-76-71).
USC defeated Oregon on the first playoff hole to claim the team championship after both teams finished the four rounds at 15-over par 1415. Oregon (351-359-360-345) began the day in a tie for third place with UCLA at 20-over par, but forced a playoff with first-place USC (355-354-352-354) after shooting a final round team score 5-under par 345. UCLA took third at 18-over par 1418 (353-360-357-348), followed by Stanford in fourth at 20-over par 1420 (354-358-352-356).
Playoffs also decided the individual medalist as USC's Matt Trainer (68-68-69-70) defeated Alex Moore (71-65-69-70) of Oregon State on the seventh playoff hole to win the title. They both ended with a four-round total 5-under par 275, while UCLA's Alex Kim took third at 3-under par 277 (68-71-70-68) and Stanford's Andrew Yun placed fourth at 2-under par 278 (72-70-66-70).
The Sun Devils will wait for their draw for the NCAA Regional, which begins May 19 at a site to be determined.
