TEMPE – The Arizona State University track and field team opened competition at a pair of meets on Friday afternoon with three individual throwers placing second in their respective events while three total marks also found their way onto the school’s all-time Top 10 lists. A handful of individuals took part in the hammer and discus competitions at the Sun Devil Open inside Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe while two women competed in the same events at the UCSD Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif.

On the home front, Jordan Clarke led the charge for the men as he took second in the hammer (first among collegiate competitors) with his personal-best toss of 61.60m (202-01). That mark, one of two on the day over the 200-foot line, moved him into the No. 5 position all-time in program history and made him just the sixth Sun Devil man to go over 200-feet in competition. In the same event, Nathan Estes was fifth (52.85m/173-05) and Roger Dolan was eighth (45.51m/149-04).

In the women’s hammer, Ashley Lampley also placed second as she hit a toss of 54.56m (179-00). The final event of the day was the men’s discus in which Estes led the way with his fifth-place showing at 46.31m (151-11).

On the coast, Anna Jelmini too second in the women’s discus (first among collegiate entries) with her national-leading mark of 60.54m (198-07), the third-best all-time in school history. Her toss, which is a slight improvement from her previous national-leading toss that was posted earlier this season, gives her a near-six-foot lead over the next athletes in the NCAA rankings. In the same event, Cj Navarro took 14th with a toss of 50.25m (164-10).

The same two women competed in the hammer competition as well with Navarro leading the way by finishing seventh overall with a personal-best toss of 58.09m (190-07). That mark stands as the sixth-best all-time in school history, just one centimeter off the fifth-best. Jelmini was 17th in 51.41m (168-08).

Both meets conclude on Saturday at their respective venues.
