Scoresheets: UCLA at ASU (pdf) | UCLA vs. CBU (pdf)
TEMPE – The No. 7 Arizona State University water polo team hung tough throughout, but in the end, it was No. 3 UCLA that was able to convert more chances on the cage as the visiting Bruins pulled away late to take an 8-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) contest from the Sun Devils on Saturday afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. The Sun Devils slipped to 4-7 on the year and 0-2 in the MPSF while the Bruins, who also defeated Cal Baptist later in the day, improved to 18-3 overall and 1-1 in the league.
UCLA took a 4-0 lead through the first quarter despite the Sun Devils getting several solid chances which were either thwarted by goalie Caitlin Dement or the cage itself. Sarah Harris put ASU on the board in the second quarter as she drove past a defender before taking a pass at the back post and slipping a shot past Dement for the only goal in the second stanza. Trailing 4-1 at the intermission, both teams played strong defense once again in the third with the Bruins scoring the lone goal of the stanza with just over one minute remaining. Leading 5-1, UCLA added three more goals in the final quarter for the 8-1 final.
Defensively, Ianeta Hutchinson recorded 10 saves in the cage for the Sun Devils, including three in the scoreless second and four more in the third. UCLA’s Dement stopped seven in the first half of play before being spelled by Sami Hill, who stopped six shots in the second half of play.
In the second game of the day, the Bruins had five players score multiple goals and four others net one each to take a 17-5 decision from CBU. Becca Dorst led the way with four goals for UCLA while Sarah Orozco, Giselle Naranjo, Grace Reynolds and Hannah Sebenaler each netted two goals while CBU was led by Petra Kovacs, who scored four of her team’s five total goals. The Bruins led, 7-0, through the first quarter and didn’t look back, holding leads of 10-2 and 15-3 through the second and third quarters, respectively.
The Sun Devils will be back in their home waters tonight at 6 p.m. when they face CBU.
