SURPRISE, Ariz. - Despite outhitting Cal State Bakersfield 10-4, it was the Roadrunners who got the best of the Sun Devils on Thursday night in Surprise, beating ASU 2-1 in 10 innings at Surprise Stadium. The loss drops the Devils to 6-2 on the year.

Bakersfield's Cael Brockmeyer, who entered the game in the seventh inning, provided the winning margin with his leadoff home run in the 10th off of Mitch Lambson (0-1).

Starter Jake Barrett was fantastic, allowing only an unearned run in his six innings, but he was out-dueled by Tommy Hoenshell, who went nine and allowed only one run to earn the win. Martin Medina picked up the save, his third.

Both teams traded zeros until the fifth, when the Roadrunners took advantage of a Riccio Torrez throwing error that allowed Oscar Sanay to reach. He came around to score on a two-out double by DC Legg that gave CSUB a 1-0 lead.

The Devils would even things up in the seventh thanks to some clutch hitting by Austin Barnes. With two out, Deven Marrero and Matt Newman each singled, bringing Barnes up with runners at the corners. He scorched a single to right to score Marrero and tie the game.

Arizona State looked like they would win it in the ninth, putting two on with one out, but Hoenshell worked out of the jam to send it to extra innings, allowing Brockmeyer to put the Runners ahead. ASU threatened in the 10th when they put the first two runners on, but Medina would close the door, giving Cal State Bakersfield the upset win.

Marrero had three hits in the loss and Riccio Torrez and Newman each contributed two. Barrett struck out six in his outing, getting the no decision.

The Sun Devils will face the Northern Illinois Huskies on Friday night at Surprise Stadium. The game will begin 45 minutes following the MLB Spring Training game.
