TEMPE – Senior Sarah Harris scored three times and junior Annabelle Carter netted four more, but visiting No. 9 San Jose State pulled away late as the visiting Spartans downed the No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team, 10-8, in a back-and-forth, fast-paced game Saturday afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. The loss dropped the Sun Devils to 8-10 on the year and 0-5 in the MPSF while the Spartans, winners of their last nine in a row, are now 16-8 and 2-2 in the MPSF.
Both teams scored two goals each in the first three quarters of play, sending the game into the fourth tied at 6-6. In the final period of play, SJSU took the lead and ASU tied it at 7-7 with a goal from Harris, her third of the game, before extending their lead to two goals with 5:04 remaining. The Sun Devils continued to attack and take chances on the offensive end, scoring at 4:45 as Carter hit the back of the cage for her fourth. But, SJSU clamped down and the Sun Devils were unable to score again while the Spartans added an insurance goal with 35 seconds remaining to seal the game and take the conference decision, 10-8.
Along with Carter and Harris, senior Lynlee Smith also scored once. Nikki Unbehaun, who was playing in her final home game along with Candice Phillippe, recorded four assists in the contest while Smith added two. Harris, Morgan Leach and Kelsey White each added one assist. On defense, Amanda Young saw her first action in the cage since last season and stopped six shots.
Next weekend, the Sun Devils will travel to San Diego for a four games, playing twice each on Saturday and Sunday. First up, the Sun Devils will meet No. 10 San Diego State at noon and Brown at 3 p.m. on Saturday before closing out the weekend taking on Fresno Pacific at 11 a.m. and UC San Diego at 5 p.m.
