TEMPELynlee Smith scored five goals, Mariam Salloum added four and five other teammates each scored at least one goal at the No. 7 Arizona State University water polo team rebounded from a loss earlier in the day to down visiting Cal Baptist, 16-7, on Saturday night at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. The win pushed the Sun Devils to 5-7 on the year (0-2 MPSF) while the Lancers dropped to 10-7 on the season.

The Sun Devils got off to a slow start on offense as several shots rang off the cross bar and posts while the Lancers took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before Shannon Haas scored with 3:01 left in the first to tie the game at 2-2 through one quarter of play. After the break, the Sun Devils went to work and turned the tide of the game, taking the opening sprint and seeing Salloum score just 15 seconds into the second quarter for a 3-2 lead. Salloum scored at 5:03 to break a 3-3 tie, putting the hosts ahead for good.

Kelsey White and Smith scored on back-to-back possessions with under two minutes remaining to build ASU’s lead to 6-3 before Petra Kovacs scored on the advantage with one second remaining in the half to put the score at 6-4 in favor of ASU. Following the intermission, the two teams traded goals, first with Salloum putting the hosts on top, 7-4, before Christina Webb score for CBU to bring the deficit back to two goals.

Leading, 7-5, the Sun Devils took over the game as they scored the next six goals in a row, including the last five of the third quarter, to take a 12-5 lead into the fourth. In the third, Smith scored twice before Nikki Unbehaun added a score to make it 10-5. Smith again scored with 47 seconds remaining with White notching an advantage goal with three seconds on the clock to end the stanza.

In the final quarter, ASU again marched down after Bella Morrison slamming one home from the left on the advantage. Kovacs scored her third of the game on a 5-meter penalty shot with 2:15 remaining to cap the Lancers’ scoring before Salloum closed all scoring at 1:45 as she broke away from the defense and found the back of the cage to bring the final to 16-7.

While Smith had five goals on the night, she also added four assists to equal her career-high in points in a single game with nine. Adding assists in the game for the Sun Devils were Salloum and Harris, both of which had two, and single assists from Annabelle Carter, Morrison and White.

Ianeta Hutchinson posted seven saves in the first three quarters of play before Lucy Baranyi came in for the final five minutes of the game to post two saves. CBU’s goalie, Camryn Rogers, recorded eight saves in the loss.

ASU will hit the road next weekend with a 5 p.m. game at #2 USC on Friday night in Los Angeles before playing in the Claremont Convergence on Saturday. The Sun Devils will play two or three games and their opponents will be announced, along with game times, later this week.
