TEMPE – The No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team opened its 10th varsity season on Saturday morning by taking on top-ranked Stanford in the first of four games at the Stanford Invitational and fell to the host Cardinal, 10-1, in Pool B action in Palo Alto, Calif. ASU is 0-1 on the season while SU improved to 5-0.
The hosts jumped out leads of 2-0 through the first quarter and 5-0 at halftime before the Sun Devils found the back of the cage as Becca Clopp tallied ASU’s lone goal in the contest. The Cardinal would go on to add two goals in the third and three in the fourth to bring about the final score. Annika Dries led all scorers with five goals in the game.
Defensively, Ianeta Hutchinson posted five saves in her first game with the Sun Devils while her counterpart Kate Baldoni, halted 10 Sun Devil shots in the game.
ASU continues play at the Stanford Invitational against No. 9 San Jose State later today.
