TEMPE – Shannon Haas led the offensive charge with three goals, but it was not enough as the No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team dropped a 12-8 decision to No. 3 California on Sunday morning at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., the third and final pool game for both teams. The Sun Devils are now 1-2 on the season while the Golden Bears improved to 9-1 overall.
Both teams found the back of the cage three times each in the first quarter before Cal took the lead for good in the second quarter as they outscored the Sun Devils, 3-1, for a 6-4 lead at the half. The Golden Bears won each of the final two quarters by one goal each to extend their margin to four goals and a final of 12-8.
Individually, Haas had the hot hand for the Sun Devils as she scored three times while Bella Morrison also scored in the contest. Ianeta Hutchinson was credited with four saves in the cage for the Sun Devils.
The Sun Devils will next face No. 5 Hawaii at 2 p.m. PT today with the winner earning fifth place in the tournament. If ASU wins, it will collect its highest finish ever in the event, bettering a sixth-place showing posted in 2009.
