TEMPE – The No. 9 Arizona State University water polo team opened play at the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday with a pair of game as Corona del Mar High School and split those two contests, winning the first with a 9-8 defeat of No. 11 San Jose State before falling to No. 1 Stanford, 15-7. With the decisions, the Sun Devils are now 3-5 on the year (0-1 MPSF).

In the first game, the Sun Devils led from the start, taking a 4-1 lead through the first quarter before heading into halftime with a 5-3 win. The Spartans won the third quarter, 4-3, to make it 8-7 before the Sun Devils opened the fourth quarter with a goal for a 9-7 lead. SJSU scored later in the quarter, but the Sun Devil defense, anchored by goalie Ianeta Hutchinson’s 5 saves, held off the Spartans late for their second win of the year over SJSU.

Offensively, Shannon Haas led the charge with four goals while Mariam Salloum built upon her team lead in goals with two more in the game. Nikki Unbehaun netted the first two goals of her senior season while Kelsey White finished the scoring with one goal. Lynlee Smith added three assists and Unbehaun had two while Salloum, Annabelle Carter and Sarah Harris each added one.

In the second game of the day, the Sun Devils fell behind 4-1 in the first quarter and were down, 9-2, at halftime. The Cardinal took a 13-4 lead into the final quarter where ASU won the fourth, 3-2, to bring about the final of 15-7. Harris and White led the offense with two goals each while Haas, Bella Morrison and Amanda Young each added one goal. Candice Phillippe and Carter each added one assist in the game as well. Defensively, Hutchinson turned in 10 saves on the game in the loss.

The Sun Devils will place Sunday at 8 a.m. at the UCI pool and will face No. 4 California. The winner of the game will play at 2:45 p.m. against the winner of No. 6 Loyola Marymount and #7 San Diego State for fifth place while the losers of both games will meet a 1:30 p.m. with the winner of the game finishing seventh in the tournament.
