TEMPE – The first day of action came to a close at the 2011 MPSF Indoor Championships on Friday night with the Arizona State University women holding a lead in the overall team race while the men sit fifth in the event being held at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle. Jasmine Chaney and Christabel Nettey each captured individual event titles to lead the way for the women while Ben Engelhardt’s school record in the 5,000m run and Daniel Auberry’s finish in the 200m dash were the top performances for the men.

In the team standings, the No. 25 women have scored 54 points and are ahead of No. 23 Stanford (35 points), No. 1 Oregon (32), No. 12 Arizona (28) and California (19) through the first day of action. On the men’s side, No. 6 Stanford is leading the way with 40.5 points and is followed in the Top 5 by UCLA (37.5), No. 12 Oregon (36), No. 14 Arizona (31) and ASU (26.5).

On the track for the women, Chaney led the way as she captured the 200m dash with a run of 23.77 with Dominique’ Maloy (24.09) and Kayla Sanchez (24.16) placing third and fifth, respectively, to give the Sun Devils 20 points in just that one event. The women also scored on the track in the distance medley relay as Kauren Tarver, Sarah Geren, Alyssa Allison and Anna Young combined to run 12:01.41 to finish sixth and collect three more points with the sixth-fastest time in school history.

The women’s second title came in the long jump as Christabel Nettey recorded the fourth-best mark in school history with her leap of 6.44m (21-01.50) and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with her mark. In the same event, Alycia Herring jumped 5.94m (19-06.00) to finish sixth and add three more points.

The pentathlon also was a big point earner for the women as Keia Pinnick and Samantha Henderson picked up 13 points by placing second and fourth, respectively. Pinnick scored 3,821 points while Henderson scored 3,772 points in the event while Henderson moved into a tie for eighth all-time in the high jump as she cleared 1.73m.

On the men’s side, Engelhardt ran 13:50.42 and finished fourth overall to break the school record in the 5,000m run, bettering the previous time of 13:58.54 run by Ryan Warrenburg in 2006. Those two marks stand as the only times under 14-minutes in school history as well. In the same race, Daniel Lovell scored in the team standings with his eighth-place finish in 14:01.75, which is the fourth-best time in school history, while Doug Smith ran 14:21.49 to record the ninth-best time in school history. The distance group also scored another point for the men as Darius Terry, John Kline, Nectaly Barbosa and Zeke Van Patten combined to run 9:53.32 (No. 9 all-time in ASU history) to finish eighth in the distance medley relay.

The men’s 200m dash, just like the women, produced three scorers in the Top 8, which were led by Auberry, who finished third in 21.55. In the same event, Giorgio Giurdanella was fifth overall in 21.64 while William Henry was eighth with a time of 21.75.

Also scoring in the first day of action were a pair of women in the weight throw as Ashley Lampley finished sixth overall with a toss of 17.06m (55-11.75) and Cj Navarro was seventh with a mark of 17.02m (55-10.25). The men also collected points from three field events, including Jordan Clarke, who was fifth in the weight throw (18.00m/59-00.75); Corey Phallen, who tied for fifth in the pole vault (4.97m/16-03.50); and Chris Benard, who was eighth in the long jump (7.20m/23-07.50).
