NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Arizona State men's golf team shot a 1-over par 351 and is in a tie for third place after the first round of the Battle at the Beach in Newport Beach, Calif. Four Sun Devils shot an even par 70 to pace ASU, who trails first place San Diego by three strokes.

Seniors Thomas Buran, Scott Pinckney and Oscar Zetterwall, and junior Philip Francis each shot an even par 70 in the first round and are tied for 15th. Senior James Byrne carded a 1-over par 71 and is in a tie for 27th, and senior Jesper Kennegard is tied for 68th after recording a 7-over par 77.

San Diego is atop the leaderboard at 2-under par 348, followed by defending NCAA champion Augusta State at even par 350. ASU is tied with Washington, while UCLA is knotted up in fifth and Oregon State is in 10th.
