TEMPE – Mariam Salloum scored a season-high five goals and five others chipped in with at least one goal as the No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team rebounded from a loss one day earlier to capture a 16-7 decision over host CS Monterey Bay in a game played Sunday in Seaside, Calif. The win, which snapped a three-game skid, helped the Sun Devils improve to 2-4 on the year while the Otters fell to 4-7.
So far this year, Salloum has scored in just three games, but has made those scoring appearances count as she leads the team with 13 total goals. In her previous two games with goals, she netted four in each, setting a personal-best for single-game scoring before topping that with five goals against CSUMB. She was joined in the scoring ledger by Annabelle Carter, Shannon Haas and Lylnee Smith, all of which scored three times, and single goal scores from both Sarah Harris and Kelsey White.
Defensively, Ianeta Hutchinson started the game in the cage and played the first half, saving three shots and allowing four goals. She was relieved at halftime by fellow rookie Lucy Baranyi, who played the second half of the game and stopped four shots while allowing three goals.
The Sun Devils jumped out to an early 6-2 lead through the first quarter of play and built that lead into an 11-4 lead with five more goals in the second. In the third quarter, the Sun Devils outscored the Otters, 4-2, to extend the advantage to 15-6 before both teams scored once each in the final quarter of play for the final 16-7 score.
ASU will take a week off from competition before returning to California on February 26-27 when it travels to the UC Irvine Invitational. Game times and opponents will be released later this week.
