TEMPE – Jasmine Chaney punched her ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships, members of the team won three events and nine all-time Top 10 marks in program history were recorded as the Arizona State University track and field team had another solid day of competition, this time as the Sun Devils took part in the Texas A&M Conference Challenge in College Station, Texas, on Saturday. Competing inside the same venue that will be used in just under one month from now for the NCAA meet, the Sun Devils posted 14 Top 3 finishes on the day with the women’s sprints having another solid day.
Assistant Coach Kenny McDaniel’s event group posted four of the program’s nine Top 10 marks on the day, including Chaney, who ran 23.16 in the 200m dash to better her No. 2 all-time mark in ASU history while also automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Chaney also ran 8.22 in the 60m hurdles, turning in the third-best time in ASU history while taking second in the race. In the 400m dash, Keia Pinnick ran 53.73 to finish third in the race while running the seventh-best time in school history. Those two women joined with Dominique’ Maloy and Kayla Sanchez to close out the day with a win the 4x400m relay as the Sun Devils ran 3:35.99, the eighth-best time in ASU history.
In their first races of the year, the distance athletes also made some strong showings, including Ben Engelhardt, who led a 1-2 finish in the 3,000m run as he won the race in 8:11.18. He was followed by Nick Happe, who clocked in at 8:12.25, the 10th-best time in school history. Daniel Lovell actually gave a ASU a 1-2-3 sweep in the event, but Lovell was hit with a lane violation infraction and was disqualified in the event.
In the women’s 3,000m run, Lindsay Prescott ran 9:49.20 to finish third overall in the race. Zeke Van Patten turned in the eighth-best time in school history in the mile as he finished second overall in 4:10.11. The men’s distance medley also turned in a solid time of 10:05.12, which stands as the ninth-best in school history. The relay, which finished third in the race, was made up of Darius Terry, Giorgio Giurdanella, Nectaly Barbosa and Cameron Liston.
ASU’s final win came in the men’s pole vault as Corey Phallen equaled his season high clearance with a mark of 5.22m (17-01.50), which stands as the fourth-best clearance in school history. Shaylah Simpson took second in the women’s pole vault with her third-consecutive meet with a 4-meter clearance, this time clearing 4.00m (13-01.50).
Staying in the field events, Anna Jelmini took third in the shot put with a toss of 16.68m (54-08.75), a mark that ranks fourth all-time in school history. Christabel Nettey recorded a leap of 6.12m (20-1.00) to take second in the long jump while Jordan Clarke threw the weight 18.20m (59-08.50) to take second in the men’s event.
Next Saturday, the Sun Devils will travel north to Flagstaff to compete in the NAU Tune-Up, the final competition before the MPSF Championships that will be held the following week in Seattle.
