TEMPE – Kelsey White tallied four goals on offense and Ianeta Hutchinson halted eight shots, but the No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team could not recover from an early deficit before falling to host and fourth-ranked California, 11-7, on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif. The game was the first MPSF conference action for both teams with the Sun Devils slipping to 1-4 overall (0-1 MPSF) while the Golden Bears improved to 10-2 (1-0 MPSF).
The hosts carried a 3-2 lead into the second period and doubled their lead to two goals at the intermission with a 6-4 score. After both scored three times in the third, the Golden Bears outscored the Sun Devils, 2-0, in the fourth to make it 11-7.
White was the lone multiple-goal scorer for the Sun Devils in the game as she scored four, one better than her previous single-game high of three, which she recorded twice in 2010. Adding goals for the Sun Devils were Sarah Harris, Candice Phillippe and Lynlee Smith. Cal was led by a trio of two-goal scorers in the game.
Defensively, Hutchinson stopped eight shots in the game while Cal’s Stephanie Peckham was credited with 12 saves in the cage.
The Sun Devils will return to action tomorrow at CS Monterey Bay when ASU travels to Seaside, Calif., for an 11 a.m. PT game.
