TEMPEMariam Salloum netted four goals, both Sarah Harris and Lynlee Smith recorded three each and Ianeta Hutchinson stopped 11 shots as the No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team rebounded from a loss earlier in the day to down No. 9 San Jose State, 12-9, at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Sun Devils to 1-1 on the year while the Spartans slipped to 6-5.

Both teams traded goals back and forth in the first quarter as the Spartans took leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 with the Sun Devils responding each time. Salloum and Harris tied the game the first two times before Salloum tied it again at the end of the quarter with her second goal of the game. In the second, the Sun Devils shut out the Spartans while scoring four goals of their own, including a pair from Harris, one more from Salloum and one from Smith, which gave ASU its first lead of the season.

Following the intermission and with a 7-3 lead, the two teams went back to trading goals once again with Smith and Salloum adding scores in the quarter. In the final period of play, Smith and Kelsey White scored early to put ASU ahead, 11-6. After a pair of SJSU goals, Shannon Haas scored her first goal of the year before SJSU added its final two goals for the 12-9 final.

Hutchinson, who recorded five saves against No. 1 Stanford earlier in the day, was consistent throughout the game as she posted three saves in each of the last three quarters to seal ASU’s victory. Spartan goalie Meagan Minson recorded 10 saves in the loss.

The Sun Devils face No. 3 California at 8 a.m. on Sunday in the final pool game for both teams. The outcome of the game will be used to determine who each team will play and for what place in the tournament later in the day.
