EUGENE, Ore. – Although the Arizona State University track and field program was not too busy in competition on the second day of events at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Sun Devils still impressed as the men’s 4x400m relay advanced to the finals of their race and one women posted another solid time in the hurdles on Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

In the team standings, the men have scored 12 points are fifth overall through five events scored. Kansas and Texas A&M lead the way with 18 points each while Washington stands third (16.5 points) and Florida is fourth (13). The women have not scored in the meet yet.

The relay team of Justin Kremer, Ray Miller, Donald Sanford and Joel Phillip once again turned in a strong performance as the group raced to a second-place finish in their heat and ranked fifth overall in 3:06.50 to automatically earn a spot in the in final on Saturday. Kremer got the team off to a strong start and passed the baton to Miller with ASU tied for first. Miller battled with several teams and handed off to Sanford with ASU in fourth place before the 400m finalist took it out fast and put ASU in second with Phillip maintaining that positioning to reach the final.

Prior to that race, the women’s 100m hurdle semifinal was contested with Jasmine Chaney running in her second individual race of the meet and clocked in at 13.26 to finish 14th overall on Thursday. Her time, although wind-aided with a 2.2 mps wind at her back, equals her lifetime best that she also ran in Austin, Texas, to qualify automatically to Eugene this week.

The Sun Devils will have a trio of individuals competing on Friday with one in the field and two on the track. Jason Lewis, an All-American in the discus on Wednesday, will look for his second national honor in the hammer throw while the athletes on the track will include Chaney in the finals of the 400m hurdles and Sanford in the finals of the 400m dash.
