The men's golf team shot the low round of the first two rounds Monday afternoon at the U.S. Intercollegiate held at Stanford Golf Course (par 70/6,742 yards) as it shot an 8-under 272, led by three scores in the 60s.
ASU improved its score by 37 strokes after shooting a 309 in the rain-drenched first round.
Jesper Kennegard (tied for 23rd at 3-over 143) led the second-round surge with a 6-under 64, while James Byrne is tied for 46h at 7-over 147 after firing a 2-under 68 in the second round.
Scott Pinckney improved his score by eight strokes from 79 to 71. Spencer Fletcher is at 15-over 155 (76-79).
Washington (281-281) and San Diego State (287-275) are tied for first at 2-over 562. ASU is in tenth at 21-over 581 (309-272).
The tournament concludes Tuesday with 18 holes.
After the U.S. Intercollegiate, ASU hosts the Pac-10 Championships April 26-28 at Karsten Golf Course. The Sun Devils are 12-time champions of the event, including the 2008 title and six straight titles from 1995-2000.
