Four double-digit seeds advanced after the first round of the Callaway Match Play Championship at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain in Marana, Ariz.
Fourth-seeded Arizona State recorded the first two team points of its match with victories by James Byrne and Braxton Marquez against 13th-seeded Iowa, but the Hawkeyes responded by claiming the next three matches with wins by Brad Hopfinger, Vince India and Barrett Kelpin to edge the Sun Devils 3-2.
Southern California was the first team to advance past the opening round, blitzing TCU, 4-1. Top-seeded Stanford outlasted Indiana to complete the top half of the bracket. New Mexico notched the biggest upset of the first round after knocking off second-seeded Washington. San Diego downed Texas Tech, 3-2, while third-seeded Texas A&M defeated host-school Arizona, 3-2. UNLV claimed the last match of round one by edging Middle Tennessee, 3-2.
In second-round action that was suspended due to darkness, Arizona State leads fifth-seeded UCLA, 1-0, on James Byrne's 3 and 2 win over Bruin Connor Driscoll. Braxton Marquez is all square with Mario Clemens through 16 holes, but the Bruins hold a one-hole advantage in the other three matches that are also all through 16 holes.
