A last second three pointer by Ty Abbott sealed a 69-66 win over the University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers at Wells Fargo Arena. Trent Lockett continued his solid start to the season by putting up 19 points and seven rebounds.
"We're pleased to get a very hard-fought win. It was a gut check for our team" commented ASU coach Herb Sendek.
Playing their first home game this season, ASU looked out of sync at times but was able to keep control of the game with their defense. Ty Abbott provided the leadership after a slow start and finished behind Trent Lockett in scoring with 15 points.
Freshman Kyle Cain brought the offensive spark the Sun Devils needed in the second half with a three point play with just over three minutes remaining in the game. Cain racked up 14 points, 9 of them in the second half.
Coach Sendek was impressed with Cain's play. "Couldn't be more pleased with Kyle, he is a true warrior", commented Sendek. "His improvement over the last four weeks has been nothing short of staggering".
The Sun Devils continued to lack offensive productivity in the first half only hitting 11 of their 31 shots from the field. The Devils were also 1 of 10 from behind the arc.
UAB (2-1) was led by Cameron Moore who had 22 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Jamarr Sanders added 17 points.
The Sun Devils honored "Jumpin" Joe Caldwell by raising his No. 32 jersey into the rafters. More former Sun Devils will be honored in the future including Lionel Hollins on February 17 when the Devils take on Washington.
On an afternoon when the Sun Devils honored one of their all time greats, the players fought hard and secured their first victory of the season in front of a loud and supportive crowd.
The Sun Devils (1-1) travel to Alaska for the Great Alaska Shootout over Thanksgiving. ASU takes on Houston Baptist in their first game on Thanksgiving Day at 7 PM.
