IRVINE, Calif - The Arizona State women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Friday night as the Sun Devils were defeated by UC Irvine 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Making back-to-back appearances for only the second time in school history, the Sun Devils (9-8-3) were fewer than 20 minutes away from advancing to the second round before seeing their slim lead extinguished by a pair of UC Irvine (18-2-2) goals in the span of 2:14.

The Sun Devils (9-8-3) struck first in the 17th minute when freshman Devin Marshall gathered in a ball off a free kick, then turned quickly and laced a shot passed UCI's goalkeeper to put ASU up 1-0.

ASU would cling to its one-goal lead over the next 50-plus minutes. During that span the Sun Devils nearly extended their lead on more than one occasion while at the same time staving off the Anteaters' attack.

The game would turn suddenly in the 72nd minute when UCI senior forward Tanya Taylor's shot ricocheted off the post before landing in front of UCI sophomore midfielder Devon Delarosa, who sent a shot into the lower left corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

The Anteaters would take the lead a little more than two minutes later when Delarosa's header looped its way over the reach of ASU goalkeeper Alyssa Gillmore to give UCI a 2-1 lead.

Despite their sense of urgency the Sun Devils were unable to come through with the tying goal in the final 16-plus minutes of the game.
