CORVALLIS, Ore. - For the second time in three games the Arizona State women's soccer team was unable to generate as the Sun Devils were defeated by No. 15 Oregon State 1-0 on Friday night. The Beavers improved to 14-1-1 (6-0-0 Pac-10) while the Sun Devils dropped to 8-5-3 (2-3-1 Pac-10).
For the match the Beavers held advantages in shots (14-10) and corner kicks (6-2), however were whistled for 22 of the 29 fouls called in the contests.
The Sun Devils came out as the aggressors early, taking four of the game's first five shots in the first 22-plus minutes of play. Despite continuing to control the action for the remainder of the half the Sun Devils ended up finding themselves behind at the intermission.
The Beavers broke the scoreless tie with fewer than two minutes remaining in the first half when sophomore defender Justyne Freud's free kick from beyond midfield was headed in by junior midfielder Melinda Ingalls.
In addition to giving Oregon State the lead, Ingalls' goal also turned the momentum 180 degrees. The Sun Devils, who held a 7-4 advantage in shots in the first half, were outshot 10-3 in the final 45 minutes. ASU's best chance at getting the equalizer came in the 84th minute when senior midfielder Lindsey Johns took a shot from the top of the 18, however Oregon State junior goalkeeper Colleen Boyd was there to make the final of her seven saves to preserve the Beavers' one-goal lead.
Junior defender Kari Shane led ASU with five shots while sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Gillmore collected three saves.
The Sun Devils close out their weekend trip to the state of Oregon on Sunday when they face the Oregon Ducks at noon.
