CORVALLIS, Ore. – In a complete team effort, the Sun Devil Volleyball team showed some grit and heart as they pulled off a come-from-behind win over the Oregon State Beavers Saturday night. The Sun Devils won 12-25, 26-28, 25-9, 25-17 and 15-10 to move to 6-11 overall and 1-4 in Pac-10 play while OSU drops to 8-12 overall and 1-5 in conference action.
Set one began with a dark tone for the match as the Sun Devil offense couldn’t find a rhythm on offense hitting a dismal .029 in the set as they collected only eight kills to their seven attack errors. OSU put it together on the other side of the ball, hitting .342 in the set with three blocks as they ran off with a 25-12 win to open the match.
The Sun Devils throttled back in the second set to outhit the Beavers .359 to .341 with 18 kills to force nine tie scores and four lead changes but ASU’s nine unforced errors and OSU’s three blocks were enough to spell the difference in the set with the Beavers inching to a 28-26 win to go into the break up 2-0.
With their backs against the wall, ASU came out a whole new team in the third set crushing a .452 attack percentage with Danica Mendvil hitting .667 alone and Malia Marquardt hitting a perfect 1.000 for three kills while Sarah Reaves posted a solo block to help keep OSU to a .000 average and close out the match with a 25-10 win.
The Sun Devils will now return home to host more Pac-10 action as they host USC and UCLA next Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in Tempe at Wells Fargo Arena.
